See you soon, Kublai K. Duhart, LCPC, CH.t Happy New Year! I would like to introduce you to my new book, "The Great Rabbit Escape". This is the first book published from the "Misspent Youth" series. The series is about Kyle, a young man who learns many life lessons on his farm that create internal and external challenges for him as he comes of age. He is surrounded by his family -- a competitive brother, a jocular dad, and a quick-witted mother -- and many animals that keep him busy and ever evolving. Being a therapist allows me to assist individuals with healing themselves. These short stories serve the world around me by adding lightheartedness, cheer, and hope. In the face of challenges, there should always be resiliency and progression. I am excited to share my stories with you. I hope you will read, enjoy, and pass them along to someone you know. Seeking balance through all streams of art can be therapeutic for many. "The Great Rabbit Escape" is available on Amazon.com for Kindle readers. Please follow Rian Reed on Anchor.fm/Reminisce to listen to the "Reminisce" podcast as we will be discussing the book and mental health on January 19, 2019. Stay tuned for more stories and adventures with Kyle coming soon!
Dwight D. Eisenhower once said, “Our pleasures were simple - they included survival.” In response to this, I ask: How are you surviving? Are your pleasures simple? Do you have pleasures, or are you just surviving?
The daily grind to sustain shelter, feed your family, or to keep your commitments to yourself and others is commendable, but survival is not enough. You must be able to find simple pleasures in life that allow you to appreciate what you have. These simple pleasures are what make the hustle to survive truly worth it. Examine your mind state ever so often. Determine whether your mind is set on positive or negative thoughts. Hold tight to those simple pleasures that leave you feeling grateful and at peace. If your thoughts tend to be negative, ask yourself how or if you can change what’s breaking your spirit. If you can’t change it, treat your mind to some simple pleasures. Reward your determination to survive life’s circumstances with gratitude and joy. It can be difficult to learn new habits that generate these positive mental states, but that’s the blessing in hypnosis. You can kick old habits and gently invite the new. We look forward to working with you soon. Words and images are powerful triggers. As news stations report disasters around the world 24 hours a day and constantly warn people about the potential of calamity, we’re likely to be reminded of the grief and fear we felt when we witnessed natural and man-made disasters as often as they pull the trigger.
Take “Terrorist Attack” for an example, which was dubbed as the label for the tragedy that occurred on 9/11. Think about the feelings you experience when you hear the phrase, "Terrorist Attack". How has this phrase impacted your life? Notice how the messages about terrorism around the world are delivered frantically. The words and images we hold on to after any traumatic event can trigger symptoms of PTSD. Pay attention to the words and images you and others use that can influence the way you think or feel. It is possible to be in a safe space and not realize it because of negative self-talk or messages you receive from external forces. Practicing positive self-talk and being aware of trigger words is just a couple of ways to reduce stress. There are other techniques that can help you recover from the negative effects of traumatic events. Working with a therapist who will teach you coping strategies and assist you with understanding the initial event that caused the anxiety that is still negatively affecting you is the best way to treat PTSD and can ensure that you do not succumb to harmful habits that can disrupt your life. IPCH has a unique way of assisting our clients with recovering from PTSD and develops individual treatment plans that are tailored to each client. Book your appointment today and let’s begin your journey to greatness. There is so much beauty around us. It is impossible to miss it all. The earth is filled with many wonders like the long stretch of our dynamic sky embedded with the warmth of our sun sitting more than 90 million miles away. We are provided with strength for life thanks to the earth’s nourishment and the victuals from our bountiful lands and seas. These are the formidable and free gifts of life that we have become comfortable with and lost astonishment in as human interaction overshadows their presence.
Even more overlooked in our daily routines is another great force known as Self. It is our nature to be interactive and observant. These functions are so important to us that we’ve adopted new and easier ways to communicate with and perceive each other indirectly. We are so fascinated with his or her power and less enthralled with the force within ourselves. It’s hard not to be this way; society is shaped around this behavior. But what if there was a greater benefit in knowing and understanding self? What would happen if we learned to balance our interaction with others and ourselves? Self is just as abundant as nature. Within self lies valuable answers and great wealth. Self is a never ending treasure trove. It is what all the great poets are referring to when they speak about love. It is hard to fathom that such abundance and greatness is contained within us. This must be the reason for all the distractions. This could be why networks and radio waves contend for your time and attention. If your silence was directed toward yourself instead of the million dollar picture stories and melodies more often, could you be powerful enough to change the things around you that steal your peace? Just in case this is true, dedicate 10 minutes to an hour a day of your time to silencing your mind and stilling your body. Make this a part of your new routine for a few moments after you wake up, after you eat a meal, during a lunch break, while you’re on the bus or train, or while you’re at an event. No one has to know that you are meditating, simply relax and free your mind. This is the beginning. Enjoy your journey and be well. I can recall a story once told to me. A friend of mine was fresh out of college, making low wages, and repaying high student loan bills, but he wanted to leave his parent’s home and establish his independence. The uncertainty of life made it very difficult for him to see past where he was to get to where he wanted to be. At first, he avoided all contact with others as best as he could so that his negative mood didn't affect them. He was despondent and wanted to be alone. He shared with me that he wasn't sure how he'd accomplish his goal, but, one day, he decided that he'd at least get a puppy and start teaching him simple commands so that he was ready to guard the new place. He said that first step motivated him to take many more steps, which eventually got him to where he wanted to go.
The great Lao Tzu once stated, "The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step." For you to reach your destination, you must make the decision to begin your journey to greatness. It may be no surprise to you that the first step can be the hardest step to take, but the world is yours if you dare to take it. Before you book your first appointment, I would like to encourage you to think about what greatness means to you. In other words, what do you want to achieve or how can you improve your life? Some may need help establishing some goals, because they know they want something different but aren't sure of what that is. Let your desire for greatness motivate you to take that first step. To assist you with taking this first step, I recommend that you take a moment and inhale through your nose for a 4-count, allow it to rotate in your diaphragm for a 4-count, exhale out of your mouth for a 4-count, and keep all air out for a 4-count. Repeat as many times as necessary to allow your body and mind to relax. While you do this, release all negative thoughts that are weighing you down. See the end result and know that you are a conqueror. The only thing that is keeping you from greatness is deciding not to take that first step.
